Do All Houses Sell Eventually?

20th March 2025

If you are asking yourself the question – ‘do all houses sell eventually?’ – then we can only assume that you may be having some difficulty in selling yours. Even if you haven’t got a property on the market right now, it is still a good question to ask. We’re more than happy to help make sure your property sale goes through as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

In short, the answer to the question is yes, there is no reason why any property shouldn’t eventually sell. If yours remains stagnant on the market, you may be tempted to lower the asking price to ensure a sale. In this blog we will highlight why this may not be the best idea, especially as your first option. Continue reading for more information on the question – do all houses sell eventually?

Why your house may be taking longer to sell

Overpricing

If your house is priced too high in comparison with similar properties in your area, then buyers may simply ignore it. Even in a strong market, buyers want value for money. If your initial valuation was conducted with proper research and care, and taken care of by an expert estate agency, then there really is no reason why your property should be overpriced in the first place. Seek advice from your estate agents to see whether or not the price is right. If you have overpriced, then reducing the cost will be an obvious sensible step.

Poor condition

Do all houses sell eventually if they are in poor condition? Not in every case, no. Homes in need of major repairs or updates can put buyers off, especially if the costs are too high. Some home improvements may be required before anyone takes interest in your property. However, some people looking for a ‘do-er upper’ can be tempted to buy a low cost property that requires substantial work, if they are prepared to put the work in and source contractors themselves.

Unfavourable location

Homes in areas with high crime rates, poor performing schools, or limited amenities may be harder to sell. This is an unfortunate situation and one that is almost unavoidable. It may even be the reason you are looking to sell in the first place!

Market conditions

The more buyers there are on the market, the more chance you have of making a sale. In a market where there are more sellers than buyers, some homes may struggle to sell. This is purely down to market competition.

Your property has been on the market too long

If your property is listed on the market for an extended period of time, buyers may assume that there are significant reasons putting buyers off. Again, this may be due to market conditions at the time. It may help to take the property back off the market and try again during a time when there are more active buyers. For example, the summer months are often more fruitful in this case, when compared with winter months.

Unusual or niche features

Properties with very specific designs, layouts, or restrictions may only appeal to a specific group of buyers. For example, if you have a listed building or have made some significant design changes that may not suit everyone’s taste.

Lack of marketing or exposure

If a property isn’t advertised effectively it may not attract enough interest. For example, you may have taken some poor quality photos or not advertised the property in the appropriate places. Your estate agent should be able to help you with this and ensure your home is offered to the right people.

Negative feedback

All feedback is positive feedback, or so they say. If multiple potential buyers or viewers say your home is overpriced or undesirable then it’s probably worth listening to them! You may need to lower your price as a result or make some design changes to the property.

How to ensure a house will sell

Improve presentation and aesthetics

Simple fixes like fresh paint, decluttering, and home staging can make a big difference. If you have underlying issues with your home then you should fix them first, before putting it on the market. Home staging is really important and can add thousands of pounds to your asking price. So make sure your property is immaculately presented, with every room polished and cleaned. Expand marketing efforts

Using social media, virtual tours, or different estate agents can help reach more buyers. A lot of people will conduct ‘viewings’ on the web before actually seeing a property in person, so make sure your home reaches the right audience and is presented properly online.

Offer incentives

Covering stamp duty, offering furniture, or being flexible on completion dates can make your home more attractive. Selling a house can be just as stressful as buying one, so making the process as easy and as desirable as possible for the seller will of course help proceedings.

Lower the price

If all else fails then a price reduction can attract more buyers. But avoid dropping the asking price by less than 10% or it won’t make that much of a difference to the amount of potential interest you get. Making a small drop in the price or dropping the price more than once may give the impression to potential buyers that you are struggling to sell, which may lead them to think there is something wrong with your property. Many people will avoid buying a property that is dropping in value.
